I am a member of the Algebra, Geometry and Topology (AGT) research group, one of four research groups which form the Institut de Mathématiques de Bourgogne (I.M.B).

I am currently organiser of the AGT research group seminar: Séminaire AGT

Research Interests

My interests are combinatorial and geometric group theory. A strong interest of mine is in studying the structure of Artin groups, or generalised braid groups. These are fundamental groups of complexified reflection hyperplane complements, and so closely related to Coxeter (or real reflection) groups. These groups have some very attractive properties, but there are many interesting and difficult unanswered questions. For instance, there is no known solution to the word or conjugacy problems for a general Artin group. Another theme of my research is in studying actions of groups on CAT(0) spaces (spaces of global non-positive curvature). Other topics of general interest to me include actions on treelike structures, hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, surface and 3-manifold topology, knots, links and again in this context braid groups.

Research Project : ACI Jeunes Chercheurs JC1041

I am responsible for the coordination of a collaborative research project "Structures géométriques en théorie des groupes et topologie" which is funded by the French Ministry for Research. The project is designed to bring together a number of young researchers based in France and working in the closely related areas of group theory and low-dimensional topology. More details can be found on the ACI JC1041 homepage.

The first conference meeting of this ACI research group was held on 1 June – 3 June 2005.
