    Séminaire GSD "Picard’s little theorem and hyperbolicity of moduli spaces"

    Résumé : Picard’s little theorem is one of the basic theorems in complex analysis. It has the following well-known application in algebraic geometry :
    if S is a complex algebraic variety, then any holomorphic function on S whose image avoids at least two points is algebraic. In other words, any holomorphic morphism S -> C-{0,1} is algebraic.
    Borel noticed that C-{0,1} is naturally a moduli space for elliptic curves. In 1972 he proved the analogous statement of Picard’s little theorem for the moduli space of polarized abelian varieties. That is, if X is a Shimura variety and f:S -> X is a holomorphic map, then f is algebraic. This has many nice applications (e.g., the algebraic structure on a Shimura variety is unique). In this joint work with Robert Kucharczyk, Ruiran Sun, and Kang Zuo, we generalize Borel’s theorem for the moduli space of polarized abelian varieties to other moduli spaces.
    As an application, we obtain a simple proof of the Brody hyperbolicity of these moduli spaces.
