Séminaires Math-Physique : Black hole simulations in fluids

Résumé : Since the work of Unruh in 1981, it is known that sound waves propagate
in a moving fluid as waves in a black hole space-time. This allows us to
test various effects of black hole physics in condensed matter systems. I will
discuss the analogue of the Hawking radiation in these fluid models. Under
some specific conditions, its thermal properties are recovered identically. On
the other hand, in some configurations it can trigger new types of instabilities,
such as the “black hole laser”. I will describe this this effect using a spectral
approach and show that it is encoded in a set of eigen-values of a non-
hermitian operator.
